Planetary Resources reveals plan for prospecting asteroids, creating interstellar gas stations
The cat got let out of the bag a little early, but Planetary Resources has now officially announced its existence and mission. We already told you that the venture plans to mine asteroids for profit, and is backed by a bunch of bigwigs from Silicon Valley and Hollywood. But now we know a bit more about the company after watching its announcement webcast and speaking with co-founder Peter Diamandis. Turns out, the company sees itself not only as a business venture, but as an entity that will pave the way for extending human influence throughout the solar system. Read on after the break for more.

Virgin Mobile Canada announces HTC One S giveaway, suggests $600 retail price
Much like within the US, the HTC One S has yet to invade the Canadian shoreline. While the smartphone is expected to arrive at a number of carriers, Virgin Mobile has never been one to pass up a promotional opportunity. Accordingly, it’s launched a teaser page for HTC’s brawny middleweight, along with a giveaway that promises a free handset to two lucky individuals. Curiously, it seems the contest rules may have outed Virgin’s off-contract price for the One S, and while the $600 figure is no shocker, it certainly gives purchasers an idea of what to expect. In related news, the Bell subsidiary is also currently offering the HTC One S to five beta testers — so, if you’re feeling like a good samaritan, feel free to make your case in the second source link below.

ITC issues preliminary ruling, finds Microsoft’s Xbox 360 infringes on Motorola patents
Potential bad news to start out the week for Microsofties: a judge from the US International Trade Commission has issued a preliminary ruling that finds Microsoft’s Xbox 360 infringes on five four of Motorola’s patents (and in Microsoft’s favor on one). While the decision is by no means final — which means that the Redmond outfit could ultimately prevail — a final ruling would force Microsoft’s hand to seek proper licenses for the technologies, most of which relate to H.264 video encoding, or have its gaming console banned from US shelves. For now, the lawyers will go back to the lab to refine their arguments and get ready to present them to a full panel of ITC judges later this year. Who wants to set odds on the outcome?

We hear that pilgrims have already started flocking to the town of Ivybridge (population 12,056) in the forested depths of southwest England. Very soon though, you’ll be able to pay homage to Moore’s law without travelling further than your favorite online retailer, because the third generation of Intel Core processors has just launched and should be available to buy before the end of this month. These include eight different variants of Core i7 for desktops and notebooks (including Ultrabooks of course), plus five types of Core i5 destined for desktops only. Those watching out for cheaper dual-core i5, i3 and Pentium-branded options will have to wait a little longer, because today’s launch is all about the high-end. And just how high is ‘high’? Judging from the gossip we’ve heard, and from benchmarks of leaked desktop and notebook chips, we’re looking a significant improvement over Sandy Bridge. But if you want the first official boasts, then read on.

Seacrest signs $30 million deal to stay with ‘Idol’

Ryan Seacrest is staying put at “American Idol.”
As he hinted during an interview on NBC’s TODAY show this month, Seacrest will remain with the singing competition show he’s hosted since its launch in 2002. He has inked a two-year pact, which will pay him $15 million annually.
The news comes as “Idol,” now in its 11th season, has seen its ratings post double-digit declines, down more than 20 percent in total viewers compared with a year earlier. His most recent three-year pact, which included his services on “Idol” as well as other potential projects, paid him $45 million (or $15 million a year).

Fox executives were said to be particularly eager to keep Seacrest, who has been dubbed “the glue” that keeps “Idol” together. Show producers and network execs “cannot envision the show without Ryan,” one Idol insider tells THR. “The goal has always been to keep him.”
Indeed, like judge Randy Jackson, Seacrest has provided the show stability in what otherwise has been a game of musical chairs. Seacrest has described his role as that of a conductor who keeps all of the trains running on time. The network’s other singing competition show, “The X Factor,” dumped its host following the series’ first season.
To be sure,?”Idol” is only one piece of the Seacrest’s growing empire. The multihyphenate is close to finalizing a new deal with E! parent NBCUniversal that will include the already-announced role as part of the company’s Olympics team this summer. Despite a report late last year that suggested Seacrest was being courted as a potential Matt Lauer replacement at TODAY, Lauer is remaining in the anchor chair with a rich new deal signed in early April.

Still, multiple sources have noted that Seacrest’s new deal with the expanded company likely will include such things as occasional appearances on the morning show. In question is what his ongoing involvement will be with “E! News,” a nightly entertainment news show that Seacrest co-hosts with Giuliana Rancic. Sources point out that his role with the show has waned as he’s had to juggle other projects including “Idol,” while new NBC cable entertainment chairman Bonnie Hammer has aggressively courted new talent to strengthen the “E! News” bench.
In a meeting with the press in January, NBC entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt suggested he would like to see Seacrest host Barbara Walters-esque specials for his network as well as continue to produce shows through his Ryan Seacrest Productions, the shingle behind E!’s Kardashians franchise and Bravo’s recently renewed?”Shahs of Sunset.”
Whatever the specifics of his new role, they will come in addition to his long-running Clear Channel radio gig and upcoming cable channel. Seacrest, along with partners AEG and agency CAA, announced this year that he will team with billionaire Mark Cuban to rebrand HDNet as a live-entertainment focused network called AXS (pronounced Access). Seacrest’s RSP will have a production commitment with the new venture, though it won’t preclude his first-look deal with NBCUniversal.

TA Associates Invests In Q&A Site Answers.com
Q&A platform Answers.com is announcing a ‘significant’ minority investment from private equity firm TA Associates. Financial terms of the investment were not disclosed. Answers operates a community-generated Q&A site at Answers.com, and was acquired by AFCV Holdings, a portfolio company of Summit Partners, for $127 million in cash last year. AFCV then delisted Answers, which was a public company, from the NASDAQ and took the company private. Shareholders were very unhappy with the terms of the deal, claiming it tremendously undervalued Answers.com, and tried to block the sale. Answers was also hit with a round of layoffs in June 2011.
